Face Shape Detector

Most people go their whole life guessing their face shape from a mirror or a random quiz on the internet. Some think they are oval because a hairdresser once told them so years ago. Others just never really thought about it. The problem is that the human eye is bad at judging its own proportions, especially in a mirror where everything is flipped and lit differently every time you look. StarDoppel built a face shape detector to fix exactly this. Upload a photo, and the answer comes from measurement, not from a guess made under bad bathroom lighting.

Here is how it works, what it can tell you, and why it holds up better than the quiz style pages you have probably already tried.

Disclaimer: I am 16+ and agree to have my photo analyzed for face shape detection. Photos are not saved and are deleted immediately after processing.

How To Use The Face Shape Detector

If you’ve ever wondered how to determine your face shape or understand the shape of your face, Face Shape Detector(sponsored) makes the process simple, quick and effortless. Just follow these easy steps to get accurate results and personalized hairstyle recommendations.

What Is a Face Shape Detector

A face shape detector studies your bone structure the way a stylist or an orthodontist would, except it does it in seconds. It finds where your forehead ends and your jaw begins. It checks how your cheekbone width compares to your jawline. Then it measures the full length of your face from hairline to chin.

Once those numbers exist, the tool does not need your opinion anymore. It just compares the ratios and places your face into a known category.

Compare that to a typical face shape test, the kind where you answer things like “would you say your jaw is pointed or round.” Those tests are only as good as your own self perception, which is usually not very good. A detector skips that step entirely.

How Our AI Face Shape Detector Works

The engine behind StarDoppel reads facial landmarks. Upload a photo and dozens of reference points get mapped across your face almost instantly, covering the forehead edges, the width of your cheekbones, the curve of your jaw, and where your chin sits relative to everything else.

From there, a bit of geometry takes over. Face width gets compared to face length. Jaw angle gets calculated. These numbers, not a visual impression, are what decide your shape.

A few reasons this holds up under different conditions:

Multiple points get checked across the face, not just one or two spots

Photo angle detection icon

Slight tilts in a photo get accounted for so results do not swing wildly

Beards, makeup, hairstyles and accessories do not throw it off since bone structure is what gets read

Run the same photo twice and you should get the same answer both times. That consistency is the whole point of measuring instead of guessing.

The Face Shapes Our Tool Identifies

Six shapes make up the current model.

Oval face shape icon

Oval Face Shape

Slightly longer than wide, forehead a touch broader than the jaw, everything curving gently into everything else. This is the shape most stylists point to as the easiest to work with since nearly every haircut and frame flatters it.

Round face shape icon

Round Face Shape

Width and length sit close to equal here. Cheeks are fuller, edges are soft, and there is no sharp angle anywhere along the jaw. People with round faces often ask for cuts that add a bit of visual length.

Square face shape icon

Square Face Shape

Forehead, cheekbones and jaw all land at a similar width, and the jawline itself is strong and fairly straight. It reads as angular. Soft layers or rounded glasses usually soften that.

Heart face shape icon

Heart Face Shape

Wide at the forehead, narrowing down to a smaller chin, sometimes a pointed one. Very common shape. Side swept styles and frames that are wider up top tend to suit it well.

Diamond face shape icon

Diamond Face Shape

Narrow forehead, narrow jaw, and cheekbones that clearly stick out as the widest point. Of all six shapes this is the one where a single feature, the cheekbones, really defines the look.

Oblong face shape icon

Oblong Face Shape

Noticeably longer than it is wide, without much curve along the sides. Fringe or waves are the usual fix for people wanting to shorten that visual length.

One thing worth flagging: the model does not classify a triangle shape on its own right now. Every result gets grouped into one of these six based on the closest match.

Straight on beats angled, every time. Tilt your chin up or down and the ratios shift slightly, which can nudge your result in a direction that is not quite right.

Why This Tool Is Different From Basic Online Quizzes

Type “face shape detector” into Google and you will land on a dozen pages using that exact phrase, or close variations like face shape identifier and online face shape detector. Most of them are quizzes wearing a scanner’s outfit. Answer five questions about your own face and get a label at the end.

StarDoppel’s version is not that. It is a model coded in Python, trained specifically to detect facial landmarks, running through our own API rather than a plugin bolted onto a template. Nobody licensed this from somewhere else and slapped a new logo on it.

The tool has been live since September 2025. In that time, well over 100,000 people have run a photo through it, whether to pick a new haircut, settle a bet with a friend, or just satisfy some late night curiosity about whether they are actually oval or just think they are.

A Bonus Feature: Find Your Celebrity Look Alike

There is a second, separate tool on StarDoppel that answers a different question people search for constantly: what star do I look like. It scans your face the same basic way, but instead of sorting you into a shape category, it checks your features against a dataset of celebrity faces pulled from IMDB.

This matching system was built in house too. Scan your face and it returns your top 5 closest celebrity matches. It runs independently from the face shape tool, even though the photo scanning underneath is similar. Worth trying right after you get your shape result, mostly because it is fun and takes about ten seconds.

Tips For Getting The Most Accurate Result

Small things matter more than people expect here.

  • Skip extreme angles. Tilting your chin up or down changes how your jaw and forehead ratio reads
  • Avoid heavy filters or edited photos, since these distort proportions in ways that are hard to notice by eye
  • Keep a neutral expression. Smiling shifts your cheek and jaw position slightly, which can change the result
  • Not sure about your first result? Try a second photo in better lighting and see if it holds

It costs nothing to run a few photos through and compare, so there is no real downside to double checking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:

What is the best face shape detector online?

A:

Look for one that measures actual facial landmarks instead of asking quiz style questions. Stardoppel’s tool reads your forehead, cheekbone and jawline proportions straight from a photo, so there is no self judging involved.

Q:

How can I find out my face shape without guessing?

A:

Use an online face shape detector that scans a photo and works out your proportions automatically. Guesswork disappears the moment measurement takes over.

Q:

Is there a free ai face shape analyzer available?

A:

Yes. StarDoppel’s tool costs nothing and does not ask for an account. Upload a photo and the result appears within seconds.

Q:

What shape is my face if I upload a photo?

A:

The tool analyzes your structure and sorts it into one of six categories, oval, round, square, heart, diamond or oblong.

Q:

How do I check my face shape accurately at home?

A:

Take a straight on photo in decent lighting, pull your hair back from your forehead, and run it through the detector. That combination gives the most reliable read.

Q:

How accurate is a face shape scanner compared to guessing in a mirror?

A:

Considerably more accurate, since it works off measured ratios between forehead, cheekbones and jaw rather than a subjective glance in a mirror.

Q:

Does this face type detector work for both men and women?

A:

Yes. Detection runs purely on facial proportions, so gender, hairstyle or facial hair do not change the outcome.

Q:

What is the difference between a face shape test and a face shape detector?

A:

A test usually asks how you personally perceive your face. A detector measures an actual photo with AI and returns a result grounded in that data instead of your opinion.

Q:

What star do I look like based on my face?

A:

That is answered by a different feature on StarDoppel, one that scans your face and checks it against an IMDB sourced celebrity dataset, then returns your top 5 closest matches.

Q:

Can I check my face shape from a picture on my phone?

A:

Yes, any phone photo works, whether it is fresh from the camera or pulled from your gallery. No special equipment needed.
