The engine behind StarDoppel is built entirely in-house on Python rather than relying on an off-the-shelf face recognition library. When a photo comes in, it measures the individual features of the face, the eyes, nose, jawline, lips and their proportions relative to each other, and converts that into a single score for every celebrity image in the database.
That score is a raw distance calculation: the smaller the distance between your face’s measurements and a given celebrity’s, the higher the percentage you see attached to their name. The five celebrities with the smallest distance from your face make up your result, sorted from closest to furthest.
Because the scoring is distance-based rather than a fixed threshold, small differences between two photos of the same person, a slightly different angle, a different expression, can move the percentages enough to change which name lands in first place.

The system is built to only work with a single clear face. If more than one face is detected in the frame, it won’t attempt to guess which one you meant, it returns an error and asks for a new photo instead. The same happens if no face can be detected at all, whether that’s from blur, extreme angle, or poor lighting.
There’s no strict minimum resolution requirement, phone camera photos work fine, but the image needs to be clear enough that a face is actually visible in it and reasonably straight to the camera. A photo taken side-on or at a steep tilt is the most common reason detection fails.
A few things genuinely throw off the result. A mask covering the lower half of the face removes too many reference points for an accurate read, so results in that situation tend to be unreliable. Heavy compression or a blurry photo only becomes a problem once it starts hiding the face itself, if the face is still clearly visible, compression alone doesn’t hurt accuracy much.
A number of things people expect to be a problem actually aren’t. Makeup and facial hair don’t throw the system off, the underlying proportions stay measurable either way, which is also why someone using makeup to intentionally look like a specific celebrity will often get matched to that same celebrity. Age and cosmetic procedures don’t cause noticeable issues either, since the tool is reading structural proportions rather than surface details like skin texture.
The names in the database were sourced from IMDb and cover a wide range of well-known actors, not limited to any single country or industry, Hollywood, Bollywood and other regional film industries are all represented. It’s a large library, though there’s no fixed public count, and it currently only covers actors rather than athletes, musicians or influencers.
Worth noting honestly: the database reflects the actors added when the tool was first built and hasn’t been expanded since, so very recently prominent names might not be in there yet.
The process is intentionally simple from the user’s side. A photo gets uploaded, the analyze button gets clicked, and the result, five ranked matches with percentages, typically appears within five to ten seconds. Everything runs in the cloud, there’s no local or offline processing involved, and the timing is the same whether you’re using a phone or a desktop browser.
There’s no signup form or email requirement standing between uploading a photo and seeing the result. Each photo is processed on the server purely to generate the match and is deleted immediately once that match is returned, nothing is kept in storage afterward.
Face shape alone won’t predict an exact match, since the tool works off measured proportions rather than a shape label, but it explains why certain results tend to cluster the way they do. A face noticeably longer than it is wide, with a softly rounded jaw, sits in the oval category. Width and length close to equal, paired with soft angles, points toward round. A clear, angular jawline with a forehead of similar width usually falls under square.
Heart-shaped faces carry more width at the forehead and narrow steadily to a pointed chin. Diamond faces do the opposite at the edges, narrower forehead and jaw, wider through the cheekbones. Most real faces are a blend of two categories, which is exactly why the scan measures individual proportions instead of sorting anyone into one bucket.
